In Beautiful Chances, book one of The Beautiful Series by Alicia Rae, twenty-something Lily has to deal with tragedy. Her loss is so great, it changes her, impacting her life and her mental health. Instead of reaching out to her extended family, she keeps her distance by moving away to Florida. Living in a cottage by the ocean alone for three years helps her deal with her grief. Day after day she sits on the sand writing or photographing, her mind trying to help itself heal. She gets many of her meals at a nearby eatery and has found a close friend in food server Luke. He may be handsome, but Lily feels only friendship for him. This wounded, broken young woman isn't looking for love or a relationship. Until Kyle. When she meets her gorgeous neighbor and huge flirt, her body's reaction to him is instantaneous. Kyle pursues her immediately and she quickly gives in. No matter how much time she spends with Kyle, she still needs to see her family and her aunt has been pressing her case during her calls.

Lily is a sympathetic character and I felt for her plight in the first chapter. She has a gentleness to her voice which was beguiling, a quiet melancholy with moments of poetry. I wondered about her not thinking about boys in high school (not a few times at least?). Kyle comes on strong, like a typical alpha male, letting her know his intentions. I found his dialogue at times to be too wordy. His strength is something Lily needs at this time to help her heal, but I did expect to see her schedule some form of therapy to help her cope. The chemistry between the couple sizzles and their coupling does fill many of this book's pages. I understood Lily's need to use sex as a coping mechanism, but I did tire of reading their trysts. The power of Beautiful Chances can be found when Lily finally does go home and reconnects with her aunt and uncle and cousins.

In My Beautiful, Lily is asked by Kyle to move in with him. The couple takes the next step in their relationship. But secrets arise and a mystery from the first book is continued. I did find Lily and Kyle suffered from insta-love in book one and now we see the changes in their characters. Lily continues to grow, reaching out to her family, saying goodbye to those she lost and facing her feelings of shame and blame. Kyle really steps up and puts his alpha male ways to use by providing a strong rock for Lily to lean on. Again, I found beauty in the quiet moments of the story but had to scan the numerous love scenes after awhile. A second cliff hanger played on my patience as I wondered what will happen to Lily and Kyle now that his past is being questioned. A contemporary romance heavy on the sheets has moments of gentle beauty as one young woman grasps with healing and reconnecting with family while falling in love.
