The Curse Keepers (The Curse Keeper #1)

New Adult urban fantasy

The wall between our world and that of vengeful spirits has protected humanity for more than 400 years. It’s about to come crashing down.

Ellie Lancaster has lived her whole life by the site of the mysterious Lost Colony of Roanoke, the Virginia settlement that vanished without a trace around 1590. Only the descendants of the two men who banished the spirits of an enemy tribe from the material realm know what really happened to the colony. Ellie is one of those descendants—a Curse Keeper. Her father took pains to teach her what he knew of the curse and the responsibilities of its guardians. He taught her that if the two Curse Keepers ever meet, the curse will be lifted, the gate will open, and the raging Native American spirits will be unleashed to seek their revenge.

Despite her father’s seriousness, Ellie has always taken the legend for a harmless fairy tale. Until she meets the darkly handsome, but downright infuriating, Collin Dailey and realizes everything she was told is true. For when they meet, it’s like the air is sucked from the room. Collin’s presence is electrifying… and it’s not just attraction Ellie feels, but the inexorable pull toward her destiny. The prophecy is real, and now Ellie and Collin must battle supernatural forces and their loathing—and passion—for each other to set things right.

The Curse Keepers are all that stand between the world and its destruction.

Having read some of her numerous titles from YA paranormal (On the Otherside), adult contemporary (Rose Gardner Mysteries) to  paranormal (The Chosen), I can happily attest to being a fan of author Denise Grover Swank. I'm hooked on her New Adult series, Off The Subject, so when a tour opportunity opened up to read her latest foray into paranormal with a NA series, The Curse Keepers, I signed up.

What can I say? Ms. Swank can write! The Curse Keepers combines the richness of Native American mythology with the historical mystery of the Lost Colony of Roanoke (Dare County, North Carolina), adds in a girl and mysterious guy with fantastical elements in a contemporary setting, and the birth of a captivating new series is here. Ellie is a hard working young woman, raised by her dad and she's heard about his tales concerning the Roanoke colony. Chalking all his talk about legends and curse keepers to nothing more than old tales, Ellie doesn't believe until a handsome stranger walks into the diner where she works. Collin is mysterious and a bit strange, but when they share the same space something happens, something culpable. Maybe there is some truth to her dad's stories after all?

Tense, fast paced, well-written with in-depth characters, The Curse Keepers is an enthralling introduction into a new urban fantasy series. Two main characters which took time for me to warm up to, I have to say I enjoyed that about this story. Everything in this story is gradual--the introductions, the mystery, the acknowledgments, the awakening to realizing the truth, the attraction--and all done for an apparent reason. I was hooked by Ellie's predicament and the not knowing. This is a journey I could not wait to accompany a character on.

In the author's capable hands, a tale rich in mythology and teeming with danger and mystery, The Curse Keepers kept me invested from beginning to end. Spirits seeking revenge, two opposite people must team together to ward off the cycle of something destructive, a richly imagined lore of the Keepers, I thoroughly found the book entertaining and captivating. Who thought one simple touch could be the spark which brings on the end of the world? Only from the vastly creative mind of an author named Denise Grover Swank, that's who. Can't wait for the next installment.

ABOUT Denise Grover Swank:

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Denise Grover Swank was born in Kansas City, Missouri and lived in the area until she was nineteen. Then she became a nomadic gypsy, living in five cities, four states and ten houses over the course of ten years before she moved back to her roots. She speaks English and smattering of Spanish and Chinese which she learned through an intensive Nick Jr. immersion period. Her hobbies include witty Facebook comments (in own her mind) and dancing in her kitchen with her children. (Quite badly if you believe her offspring.) Hidden talents include the gift of justification and the ability to drink massive amounts of caffeine and still fall asleep within two minutes. Her lack of the sense of smell allows her to perform many unspeakable tasks. She has six children and hasn’t lost her sanity. Or so she leads you to believe.
