Someone Else's Skye (Men of Brahm Hill #1) by Christine Wenrick
Paranormal romance
Paperback/ebook
Published October 1st 2013 by Red Tree House Publishing
Kane, Brethren Guardian and one of the few Natural Shape-Shifters left in existence, survived the bloody battle of Brahm Hill but lost two of his closest friends. For all of his good-natured sarcasm and eye-popping good looks, Kane finds himself unable to completely forget about that night, so he seeks comfort in the one thing he is truly good at . . . sex!
This shape-shifting bad boy believes in having a good time—a very good time, usually involving some mingled heavy breathing with a sexy Dhampir in a tiny closet somewhere. But when he’s sent into the freezing tundra of the Northwest Territories to investigate a troublesome supernatural being on the loose, he ends up crossing paths with a woman who almost instantly drives him insane with want . . . because she doesn’t seem to be falling for the shifter’s charms.
It’s completely inexplicable.
Skye Matthews has a job to do, and she needs to be focused on that, not spending all her time rebuffing the advances of this way-too-cocky and handsome stranger. Yet, there is something irresistible about this self-involved playboy that Skye can’t seem to stay away from. And when the unidentified Kane is sent to investigate takes an unnatural interest in her, protecting her becomes the Guardian’s top priority.

Oh my! Hot men, hot romance, hot sexy scenes. This is what an engrossing paranormal romance is all about. Author Christine Wenrick knows how to lure a reader into her novels quickly and successfully. Just as she did in her Charmed trilogy (I still remember that train scene), I was completely hooked. Someone Else's Skye is the first book in the Men of Brahm Hill series, featuring characters from the Charmed trilogy. The epic battle at the start is from the last book, The Charmed Fates, and it is a scene rife with anguish and sorrow as the survivors survey the carnage around them. Kane is a Brethren Guardian, one of the remaining natural shape-shifters, and he has lost close friends during this battle. How does he mourn? By having sex.
Sent to Alberta, Canada, to investigate a string of puzzling murders, Kane knows this is an otherworldly culprit and gets involved in solving the puzzle. He meets Skye and he feels an immediate draw to her but she doesn't care. Of course, this makes her even more alluring, coupled with her blond hair and body. Skye also feels an attraction, but unlike Kane, doesn't act on it--at first. There is a job to do--to find a murderer and stop him/her/it. Kane hasn't dealt with the type of creature committing these murders but his job is protect Skye, even if he isn't sure what he's keeping her away from.
Not knowing what the bad guy is or looks for makes for an intriguing read. The author offers an engrossing read filled with her take on paranormal creatures such a s vampires, werewolves, angels and Greek mythology. Did I say engrossing? Yes, besides the mystery, there is a marvelous tale of otherworldly beings, the human world, a steamy romance, and action to keep hungry eyes well fed. I liked both characters as individuals and as a couple. They worked well together.
Someone Else's Skye reminded me of why I love paranormal romance so much. When done exemplary, as Christine Wenrick exemplifies in this novel (and her others as well), I am transported to a place and completely lost within its realms. I look forward to my next trip with the men of Brahm Hill.
Rating: 4.5
Cover comment:
At first glance, this cover is easily dismissed. Upon a second look, I see that it is not. This is Kane's story and showcasing him with the dark background, bare chested, with eyes downcast, and face in half shadow, is subtle in an artistic way. That star in the upper corner is symbolic. I really like this cover.
