Danger and Romance
…Roll like thunder in Kat Bonner’s world, when a known felon comes to the ranch to drop a bomb about her past. Kat turns to Pierce for help, the same Pierce who bucks her every chance he gets … and whose feverish investigation lands them in trouble with the law and directly in the path of a serial killer.
Mystery deepens, fraught with wrong turns, bumbling detectives, old murders, and Kat’s doppelganger no one ever sees but her, just as she never sees the change in Pierce’s feelings toward her brewing, mounting, until she can no longer deny them.
Excerpt:
Conscious of Pierce waiting a few feet behind her, she thought he stood still to soak in the moonlight and the patches of stars hanging overhead.
“It’s strange,” Kat told him as she walked to the giant oak halfway up the path to the house. “I searched for stars from my hotel room in Chicago but couldn’t find any—not even a few.”
Kat turned to glance at Pierce. He had followed her and now stared at her with a strange light in his eyes.
“Sometimes you have to work real hard just to catch one,” he said, a peculiar tone in his voice. “Star is present, shining a light—sometimes so close, the proximity blinds you to anything else around. Other times the brightness is hidden away by daily grind—like life in the city,” he added, staring intently.
Kat leaned against the oak’s large trunk, waiting for Pierce to come closer. “Are you talking about the stars in the sky, or people?”
He smiled. “Astute and clever, as always.” Hands dug deep in his pant pockets, he came within three feet of her. He faced her, as though poised to move forward, both feet apart, staring at her with a glow in his eyes Kat had never spotted before.
“If you’re talking about people, you couldn’t be more right. The moment you’re about to lose someone is when you realize how lucky you are just to be a part of their world.” Kat thought about her parents, her cousins, the life she’d grown accustomed to leading. “I thought I’d lost a whole family, Pierce. I did. For the first time in my life, I examined all of them and I recognized their shine, their brilliance, their kindness.” She pinched her lips. She didn’t want to cry, not tonight, not in front of Pierce. “Likewise when you’ve lost someone you … might have loved.”
