My Unexpected Forever (Beaumont #2) by Heidi McLaughlin
New Adult contemporary romance
ebook* self-published
Published September 2nd 2013

I expected a life of music.
I expected to raise my son.
It took one look to make everything change.
I never expected happiness.

I never expected to find her.
I never expected to feel desire.
I never expected I’d be a family man.
I never expected to be loved.
I never expected to fall in love.

They say you should expect the unexpected, I didn’t realize my unexpected would be the forever kind.

My grandma once told me that I can do anything I want, so I am.

Originally from the Pacific Northwest, I now live in picturesque Vermont, with my husband and two daughters. Also renting space in our home is an overhyper Beagle/Jack Russell and two Parakeets.

During the day you'll find me behind a desk talking about Land Use. At night, I'm writing one of the many stories I plan to release or sitting courtside during either daughter's basketball games.

I'm also an active reviewer on The Readiacs - a site I own with my best friend and uber special beta, Yvette.

Okay, I know I can carry on about what bothers me in some of the NA I read. This is not the case with this review. Happily, I can report this is my first Heidi McLaughlin novel and it won't be my last. My Unexpected Forever could have become a mess in another author's hands but not with this author. I found two things I look for and admire the most in New Adult: maturity and believability. Katelyn and Harrison's story had both and a whole lot more.

Heartbreak. Loss. Attraction. Mourning. This story had bits and pieces of these character's on each and every page. Their pain and a culmination of so many other emotions could be sensed with each passing paragraph. Harrison is a drummer in a successful band, has recently found out he's a dad after a groupie left his baby at his house. Katelyn has lost her husband, her other half, and is now raising their twin daughters. Both of these characters are attracted to each other. But now what? When is the time right to make a move? What type of move? When?

The questions could last for hours. Author Heidi McLaughlin depicts these two adults with undeniable realism. Their touch, a look, a feeling, so much is depicted for the reader and then everything is doubled with the inclusion of their children. The kids. When Katelyn's daughter has a nightmare on the bus and she doesn't hear her crying, Harrison does, this mom is distraught. What's wrong with her she asks her close friend, Josie. Always dependable, Josie reassures her. Life on the road, the stress of traveling with young kids, fighting a growing desire, there's a lot going on in this story which sucks the reader up and places them alongside this family of characters in flux.

When is the right time to stop mourning the loss of a spouse and allow oneself to move one? Katelyn grapples with this as she is learning to manage a hot band on tour. Harrison knows his heart already belongs to Katelyn--will she accept him or refuse him and can he go on just as he's learning to live with and love his son, Quinn?

I can't share the answers, sorry. I will also admit I did not read the first book, Forever My Girl. There were references to past incidents but I discerned enough from the story to understand what had conspired in the past enough to root me in the present. What I can say is if hot, talented rock stars, strong, pretty women and gripping realistic relationships are things you're into, grab a copy of My Unexpected Forever and dig in for the long, emotional ride.
