Determined to overcome a dark and tragic past, college student Everly Wallace is only months away from earning her degree in physical therapy. She’s consumed with school, caring for her ailing grandfather, and figuring out how to pay the next bill. The last thing she wants is a relationship, but it just might be the one thing she needs.
Major League pitcher Cole Parker hasn’t fought for anything in his life. He went from a privileged upbringing to a multimillion dollar All-Star career. But when his pitching shoulder starts to give him trouble at only twenty-four years old, he faces the possibility of his injury becoming public knowledge and costing him everything.
In a desperate bid to save his career, Cole decides to hire someone to treat his injury, someone who will keep things off the record and out of the media. He finds the perfect solution in Everly. As mysterious as she is beautiful, she provides an enticing distraction from his pain. Soon, physical therapy is the last thing on his mind.
When an act of betrayal brings the truths they both fear to light, Cole will have to fight for the first time in his life…not just for his career, but for Everly’s love.

For Everly by Raine Thomas is an absorbing novel. I mean, totally absorbing. Here are two lead characters who are mature, respectable, hard working, and fall in love over time. Yes, I said over time. The love story isn't the main proponent of the book and their relationship progresses naturally, realistically.
Everly is finishing up her doctorate to become a physical therapist. Cole is a successful, highly popular major baseball league pitcher. They meet when his older brother Wyatt introduces them with the plan to have Everly help Cole heal his pitching shoulder. A student? Yes, that is Everly's argument but Wyatt believes in her, in her talent, in her knowledge and ability. Since he has helped her immensely with school and getting a job, she trusts him. It helps that she's a huge fan of Cole. Luckily, she doesn't go all fan girl on him.
I couldn't help but really like these two characters. Everly hasn't had it easy with a rough childhood. Her father abandoned them, her mother couldn't cope and sank into a life of addiction. Everly was ultimately raised by her grandparents and her Pee Paw (isn't that the cutest?) is now sick. She works to pay his medical and nurse bills while finishing her degree. She's intelligent, had drive, and is determined not to let her past out. She wears a mask. Cole has lead a good life, is loved by many fans, and has a contract up for renewal. He doesn't want his injury to be publicized and risk his being traded or taking a cut in pay. What he had been doing to ease his pain was seek comfort in a bottle. After an accident, his brother, a cardiologist intervenes and decides to go along with Cole's plan to find a therapist who won't publicize his recovery.
Raine Thomas' writing drew me in from the beginning. A taut, brief action scene and then an introduction into Cole's life. He's a great character, realistic, funny, thoughtful, compassionate, and thoroughly swoon-inducing. I loved what he does for Everly in the restaurant scene. Everly, what can I say about her? She easily became one of my favorite NA characters of 2013. I admired her spunk, her professionalism, maturity, hard working attitude, and her humor. She can look at herself and admit she doesn't have a social life--how can she when she's always working or studying or taking care of Pee Paw? Yet, there's not a moment when she feels sorry for herself. This is a woman we can relate to and love just as much as the good looking, popular Cole.
As for the scenes between Everly and Cole, I loved the progression of their story and how they fell in love during his recuperation. For Everly is a well-written story, features engaging characters and a character-driven plot. The dialogue flows and I found the story seamless. I can't wait to see what author Raine Thomas has in store for her fans with her next book. I know I will be reading it.
