Addicted to You by Colina Brennan
New Adult Contemporary Romance
Publication date: June 25th 2013
Purchase: Amazon | B&N

When twenty-one-year-old Leah Carter’s latest one night stand burglarizes her apartment, her roommate forces her to attend therapy for sex addicts. Leah insists she isn’t a sex addict; she just doesn’t do relationships. After all, sooner or later, everyone lets you down.

At first, the group sessions are little more than an education on how to be promiscuous. Until she meets the newest addict—blue eyes, killer body, and a smile that tempts relapse.

Psychology student Will McLean is posing as a fellow addict while researching a case study on unusual addictions. But the more he learns about Leah, the more certain he is that his desire to break through her walls and unearth her secrets has nothing to do with his assignment.

As the uncertainties spike alongside the sexual tension, the only thing Leah knows for sure is that falling in love would be disastrous. Too bad love might be one addiction she can’t kick.

Addicted to You is the second New Adult contemporary romance I've read this year that shares the same title with another in the same genre. I enjoyed both, especially since each gave readers a different perspective on their character's addiction to sex. In Colina Brennan's novel, I felt Leah Carter didn't have a true addiction. The way she used sex as a tool to hide her problems stemmed from raising a younger brother and dealing with her family issues. Still, when she brings a guy home to sleep with and he burglarizes the place, her roommate and friend, Helena, tells her she needs help. When Leah attends group sessions she thinks she's hit the jackpot. Here's a bunch of people with wild stories about their own hook ups--not only are they like her, they're providing her with inspiration! But then Will walks in and the sessions suddenly change for Leah. Will is hot, nice, supposedly addicted and has a Scottish accent. Ding! Leah is smitten big time. So is Will.

Colina Brennan's writing style is fluid and easily draws the reader into her debut novel. Leah is a likable character and the more we understand her only cements our feelings for her. Will is instantly lovable and together these two share an intense chemistry. For me, Leah and Will's attraction practically dripped off the page. With such a combustible couple, one would expect to read about their trysts but I found the story mild pertaining to their actual coupling. Guess what? I didn't mind at all. In fact, this aspect of the story made me like the story even more. I do tire of reading sex scenes in NA, especially when they sound more like filler in lieu of an actual story.

In Addicted To You there is a story, conflict, and romance. This is a well-rounded character study and expose on misguided feelings, the hesitancy to allow oneself to open up to feel and love, and a gorgeous love story created by a chance meeting between two strong individuals. What infuses the story even more is the fact Will is pretending to have an addiction as a means to garner information for a professor and winds up with a real addiction. Leah has feelings for him but fights herself at every step. Will understands and comes back after every time she's mean or harsh to him. There is a true sense of pain here, nothing fake, which only infused my belief that Leah and Will are a great couple. I thoroughly enjoyed their story!

  1. Great review! I tend to stay away from this type of book but I think I'll give this one a chance because from the way you describe it, the set-up with the sex addiction and the therapy group is not just an excuse for tons of sex scenes. There's more depth to it and the characters sound great :)
