An Endless Summer (Summer #2) by C.J. Duggan
New Adult contemporary romance
Ebook, 311 pages
Self-published (Release Date: 07/17/13)

Sean looked out over the lake, squinting against the sunlight. He turned to me, his expression sobering as his eyes flicked over my face in a silent study.“Come on Amy, I saved you once, I’ll save you again.”

I met his stare unflinchingly. “I don’t need saving.”

A wicked grin formed slowly. “Don’t you?”

After a rebellious summer night that almost claimed her life, Amy Henderson – the Onslow publican’s only daughter – is sent away to suffer a fate far worse than any other punishment:Boarding School.

Three years on, a now nineteen-year-old Amy returns to Onslow for the summer. What once was a cauldron of activity with live bands, hot meals and cold beers, the Onslow Hotel now lies dark, deserted and depressing. All fond childhood memories of loitering on the hotel stairs and eavesdropping on customers’ colourful conversations are in the distant past.

How had her dad let it come to this?

With the new threat of putting the Onslow up for sale, Amy reluctantly turns to a local tradesman for help: Sean Murphy, the very same Onslow boy who saved her life all those years ago. With his help and that of some old friends, the task is clear: spend the summer building the hotel back up to its former glory or lose it for good.

In an endless summer, Amy soon realises that sometimes in order to save your future, you have to face your past, even if it’s in the form of a smug, gorgeous Onslow boy.

The boys of summer from down under are back and I am thrilled to see them again. I thoroughly enjoyed C.J. Duggan's first book of her Summer series, The Boys of Summer (my review) so returning to the Onslow and this quaint town and its' characters was like meeting up with an old friend.

"...it wasn't his fault. I mean, he saved my life, but I didn't want him to be my constant savoir. I needed to save myself sometimes."
Meet Amy Henderson, only child of the owners of the Onslow. She grew up at the resort spending her summers there until the one summer where she tried to help her friend by getting a guy's attention and almost drowned. Her rescuer? Onslow Boy himself, Sean Murphy. Amy's parents retaliate against her raucous behavoir and send her to boarding school. When she returns back to the Onslow by herself, she sees firsthand how her father walked away from their family establishment, leaving an imbecile to run the place. Rundown and dirty, Amy realizes how beloved the hotel is, the restaurant, the bars, the view from the balcony. Can she fix what's broken?

"So this is how it's going to be?" I bit out.
"Lose some of that pride, Amy." Sean's thumb hovered over the call button. "Accept a helping hand once in a while."
Amy is stubborn and set in her ways, like her dad used to be before he changed to make her mother happy. Amy wants to fix up the Onslow but sees she can't do it all by herself. Reluctantly, she lets Sean help out. And that's when the attraction between them is noticeable. Still, Amy doesn't want to give in to her growing feelings for the playboy Sean, but his reputation may be bloated because the Sean she sees is a good guy, with incredible eyes and a killer bod. Sean isn't the only one who wants to see the Onslow return to its glory days as Amy encounters friends from the past like Tess and her cousin Chris. This summer may just be the most memorable of all.

I liked Amy a lot. She's strong, stubborn, can be dramatic and has feisty moments. Her scenes with Sean were a contradiction as her feelings conflict with her mind and heart. Sean is a great guy, humorous, observant, a quiet hero with a heart of gold. Other characters return and I was glad to see Tess and Chris and even Melba. This is Amy's story--a young woman undecided about the direction of her life and noting her answer stands in front of her eyes. Her mother doesn't make matters any better but as I said, Amy is stubborn, and she wants to see the Onslow become the beacon of summer fun it once was. Surprisingly, others feel the same way.

"The heat seeping from skin to skin was so intense I thought I would be burned by his touch. A touch I found myself leaning back into. His chest was like a living, breathing wall--so sturdy, so strong. His thumb stroked my upper arm in a soothing, circular motion. I could sense his lips near my ear as his breaths swept across my cheek. I slowly lifted my eyes to him. Gone was any sign of amusement or even concern. Instead, there was something I hadn't seen before, and didn't know how to name it."
Oh yes, I had to fan myself while reading! There isn't an insta-love in An Endless Summer. No way. Amy and Sean's attraction rises like the temperature rises throughout the summer months. The birth of an undeniable attraction first began three years back when Amy almost drowned and Sean pulled her out of the water. Since Amy was younger, neither admitted to it but time has since passed and Amy has grown up. The book has these gentle romantic scenes between them, almost like light breezes kicking in off the lake, and they added to the ambiance of this addicting New Adult romance. C. J. Duggan really shows the reader what her characters are feeling and I was hooked into the book from its opening pages.

An Endless Summer is a welcome addition to the Summer series by C.J. Duggan. I loved watching and falling in love with Amy, Sean, the Onslow and a town full of memorable characters. I hope to return for the next book. Grab this series and take them on vacation. Be prepared to be swept away by the Onslow Boys and the girls who love them!
