I'm an author of YA fantasy novels, which means I'm the luckiest person alive 'cause I get to spend my day playing with my characters. Some are totally cool, others aren't so nice, but they all bring something to the party.
In Kera's world, their leader wants to rid the land of the hybrids and rule the realm. Kera has her own secret and doesn't want to become the wife of this ruler. Together with Dylan, they embark on an awesome adventure. For a kid accustomed to leaving whenever his mom's relationships fail, the now abandoned Dylan has a chance at love with Kera. With a strong supporting cast of secondary characters, including his grandparents, friend Jason, Leo, and Bodog, Dylan does. Told in the first person pov of Dylan, we are witnesses to the immediacy of the story and with Kera's third person pov, the novel is rounded out by her insight into her magical world. Seeing both worlds--earth and Teag--interact with each other was great.
Realistically dark, The Marked Son is a fast-paced fantasy touching upon serious issues like abandonment, belonging, and identity, along with heaping doses of action and a touch of romance. Fey fans will like this series. In The Fallen Prince, the important word is "change." Dylan is changing, he now has cool powers but he also has this increasing rage which he has to learn to control along with his increasing fire power. Kera also faces change, realizing what's happening to Dylan but not telling him everything in fear of her homeland of Teag. Trust becomes an issue as Dylan begins to doubt her. When she is kidnapped and held in a place where none have survived to return, Dylan embarks on another adventure where the increasing evil of the Teag and the Unknown where Kera is, seeps out into Dylan's world. Can Dylan learn to control his new powers, retrieve Kera, and finally take his place as the Prince of Teag?
If the fast pace of The Marked Son kept me firmly in my seat, the increased pace and complexities of The Fallen Prince had me wishing I could read faster. Reading from a guy's pov has really given this series a unique feel as we experience and see everything Dylan does. When paired with Kera's pov, her third person pov helps us keep our perspectives as 'visitors' while we still gain the advantage of watching what happens to her. This split in pov took some time to adjust to in the first book, but I now like it and feel the story has depth and feeling from this combination of narration. Favorite characters like Lucinda (can she be any better?) and Pops, only increased my affection for this series and for Shea Berkley's creative mind and writing. I can't spoil the creepy, wicked fun of this second installment of The Keepers of Life series, so all I will say is, Dylan and Kera are only getting better and their tale more addictive. Bring on book three!

Cover comment:
Some may argue and say these covers are simple featuring the same hooded model and while I may agree, there's something about these covers that works. The first cover has a more secretive, held back Dylan and the second has Dylan closer up and looking more defiant and comfortable in his own skin. I think the photos reflect the journey of his character. I also like the image of the woods and the typeface (love the font for The Fallen Son, digging the "O").
