It has been some a while since I spent time with the men and women of the Kyn. Lynn Veihl's Darkyn series is one of the top favorite PNR series, ranking high on the list which includes Lara Adrian, Sherrilyn Kenyon, J.R. Ward and Jacquelyn Frank. Nightborn is the first book in a spin-off series titled Lords of the Darkyn. Korvel is the Captain in this story, trying to locate a gold scroll for Richard, the High Lord of the Immortal Darkyn. When he is injured with copper and left for dead, a woman in a habit knows what to do for him. That woman is Simone and in her case looks are absolutely deceiving.

The meek looking long braided woman in nun's clothing surprises Korvel with her skills. Korvel surprises her by treating her with respect, something she hasn't received in her lifetime from the males she associated with.

Viehl has done it again--created another absorbing Darkyn tale. Handsome vampires, tough combative women, a web of lies, deceit, murder and mysteries to solve, along with some creepy artifacts, I enjoyed reading Korvel and Simone's story. It was nice to see Nick and Gabriel again and briefly see Dr. Alexandra. Simone was a likable character, tough exterior, quiet, intelligent and one of the most highly skilled fighters in paranormal romance today who did not have superpowers. The mystery upon which the story ended with (involving Simone's blood) was a sweet twist I was not expecting and certainly sets up the prospect for future interesting stories in this series. The love scenes were not overdone and it was nice to see a Darkyn male act so gently with a woman. It was about time Korvel found a true love after the debacle with Alexandre. 

Loads of action, two remarkable leading characters, a tender love story, and an intriguing mystery make Nightborn and the Lords of the Darkyn series welcome additions to the paranormal romance market. It also gives me an excuse to read more by Lynn Viehl.
