Praise for The Realm of the Lost
"Who would have thought that in that few pages one can make a magical, wonderful and well-written story?... I recommend this book. Most especially to children out there!"
-Samaine from Bookworms Avenue
"What a truly magnificent and unique plot and concept! Where do you go when you pass away too young? Emma Ramos has created a truly facinating and absorbing novella that leaves the reader pondering this question- characters and plot devices are spot on- fast moving and deeply moving, THE REALM OF THE LOST comes very highly recommended!"

Review: I always find it harder to review novellas over novels due to the shortness of their length. I usually find myself wanting to know more about the characters or their background to better connect with the story but with Emma Eden Ramos' novella, The Realm of the Lost, I didn't have those concerns. The author gave us just the right amount of information about thirteen year old Kat Gallagher from the piece of of jewelry her grandmother gave her to her parents' divorce to how she feels about leaving New Jersey's suburbs for apartment living in Manhattan. When her mom makes her go to school on a snowy morning, she loses her patience with her slower moving younger sister and grabs her arm, trying to hurry the girl up. A fight ensues and before we know it, Kat takes off running, hears the screech of brakes then awakens in a foreign place.
This realm she learns is one of four. The one she is in is for those who died before their time. Though the concept isn't new, the execution is refreshingly well done, full of inventive details, characters, and creatures. Kat learns a few things about herself and her life before the predictable but still smile worthy ending.
Middle grade readers will welcome the outspoken and strong Kat, seeing in her some of themselves or their friends. The Realm of the Lost may be a quick read but it is satisfying, fun, and readers may wind up appreciating what they have in life a lot more.
