When you're lost, sometimes the only place you can go is home.
Broken over the death of her fiancé, Molly leaves law school to return to her childhood home in North Carolina. Expecting to lay low until she can figure out what else to do with her life, she finds herself in the arms of her high school sweetheart, the boy who represents everything from the past she tried to leave behind.
Looking for an escape, she instead finds a way back to the girl she almost forgot existed and a future she never dreamed possible.
About the author:
Alyssa Rose Ivy
Alyssa Rose Ivy is a Young Adult and New Adult author who loves to weave stories with romance and a southern setting. Although raised in the New York area, she fell in love with the South after moving to New Orleans for college. After years as a perpetual student, she turned back to her creative side and decided to write. She lives in North Carolina with her husband and two young children, and she can usually be found with a cup of coffee in her hand.
My thoughts:
Derailed is an enjoyable, touching contemporary New Adult novel. Molly Matthews leaves Boston to return home to North Carolina to get a new start at her life. At 22, she's just quit law school and is grieving over the loss of her fiance, Adam. Clayton Falls is one of those small picturesque, homey towns with its ocean views where everyone knows everyone else including each other's business. As much as she loves her hometown, the place holds many memories, many good, some bad. Her father's death and her break-up with high school sweetheart, Ben, are just some of the things she carries around inside of her. But can Molly find the answers she seeks about her life and future in a place which reminds her so much of her past?
Since reading Derailed, I've been thinking about Molly and have to admit Alyssa Rose Ivy nailed her main character. The author conveys the emotions and feeling this young woman deals with as she faces the open canvas of her future. We think when we graduate high school that's when those big 'life decisions' have to be made. Maybe some, bit once college graduation is over with and, in some cases, grad school, that's when the pathway to one's life is usually decided. Molly thought she wanted a career in law and realized the money and success was not what she wanted. She wants to smell the ocean air, take photos, and as her stay in Clayton Falls grows longer, she desires happiness and love.
Ben is a wonderfully flawed character. Jealous, flirty, funny and down to earth, he's a musician and desperately and wholeheartedly loves Molly. Derailed showcases their love and the steps they take to get back to each other. I laughed, teared up, and smiled a lot reading their story. The pacing was steady and the cast of characters was well defined. There were some wonderful characters like Molly's best friend and even Ben's younger brother Jake.
Success, money, power, security--they don't mean much if one doesn't have love and someone to share their life with. Derailed is a contemporary New Adult romance recommended for those who enjoy reading romance.
