Review:
Addison Moore has created a surreal world in Ephemeral, the first installment in her Countenance series. Main character Laken supposedly dies in a car crash and awakens in the woods where she's attacked by a zombie and saved by a guy. Whisked away to a school, she meets her roommate and finds her brother, Fletcher, who died along with his friend, Wes. Shocked to see both her brother and the guy she loved in this other world, she also sees they don't seem to remember the guys they used to be. Is Laken really dead, is she dreaming, or is this some sort of parallel existence?
Ephemeral poses some interesting questions about life and death and the possibility of something more. The place (or plane) Laken is at, the Ephemeral, is inhabited with otherworldy creatures such as angels, zombies, ghosts and more. There is good and there is a whole lot of evil in this place. There are factions here like the Counts, Spectators and Celestra and some have powers and special blood. I did find some aspects of the story confusing, some parts were head scratchers, the plot was lacking, and there was too much emphasis on romance and dating without a basis for it. They die, don't remember their previous existence much, but want to date and obviously have hormone issues to contend with. Laken, happy to be reunited with Wes, also begins to see Cooper, the guy who saved her in the beginning, on the sneak. If she knows Wes isn't the same person, wouldn't her feelings change towards him?
Laken herself is a character I want to like more than I do. She has a good sense of humor, is determined to find out what's going on in the Ephemeral with her strange new/old family and unveil her connection through all of this. I lost some respect for her in the passages where she carried on about Wes. I wanted to shake her and tell her she had more pressing matter/problems. Since the basis for some of this world are from the author's previous Celestra books, I wonder if I should've read those first to gain a better or deeper understanding of the current events in this book. The world depicted in Ephemeral and some of its storylines did intrigue me and I like the author's style of writing to warrant my picking up the second book.
