A Song for Scandal
Music is a great inspiration for me. Listening to satellite radio on the way to work, I get very fond of a lot of the popular music. Originally, I was a Phil Collins and Genesis and Sting fan. Now I’m more likely to turn to Lady Gaga, Maroon 5, and P!nk. (Okay, I’m still a die-hard Sting fan. The man’s music is romantic beyond belief.) But a lot of the music I now listen to has the power to inspire some of my best story ideas. And if they don’t actually inspire the story, they encourage me when I’m writing them.
While I was writing Only Scandal Will Do, Lady Gaga came out with “Bad Romance.” And man, did I HATE that song! I’d change the station automatically whenever it came on. But I have two teenagers, who actually liked the song. So when they were in the car, I couldn’t get rid of it. And after listening to it a couple of times, I actually started to like it. And then I came to absolutely LOVE the song. I made it my ring tone on my cell phone. And I planned (and still plan) to use it as the ring tone for my agent when I get one. LOL
So “Bad Romance” came to be the song I thought about while I was writing my “bad” romance, Only Scandal Will Do. And it sort of fit--when Duncan meets Katarina it’s a “bad” romance to begin with: he thinks she’s a whore and buys her at an auction for a night of pleasure. They’re attracted to each other, but appalled because they are.
“Caught in a bad romance” indeed!
I had visions of using the song eventually in a book trailer, but of course that didn’t happen. But the pace and my visual images of “Bad Romance” certainly fit with the relentless pace of Scandal. (In the trailer that I just recently released, the music is also a driving force. It’s an instrumental by Kevin MacLeod called Five Armies that fits the images and the book to a tee.) I can’t hear the song without thinking of my book.
For some of my other books I have whole play lists, but for Scandal there’s only ever been the one--a “Bad Romance” that’s all good. I like to think Lady Gaga would be proud. LOL

ReplyDeleteMusic inspires me too...But I'm a country fan through and through and some 80's hair band hard rock...LOL. I have a Western coming out in May that was inspired by Rascal Flatts' God Bless the Broken Road. Great post, Jenna.
