Wilde's Fire
(Darkness Falls #1)
by Krystal Wade
"There is no pain in this death, only peace, knowing I am going to die with the one I love the most." - Katriona Wilde. Katriona Wilde has never wondered what it would feel like to have everything she's ever known and loved ripped away, but she is about to find out. When she inadvertently leads her sister and best friend through a portal into a world she's dreamed of for six years, she finds herself faced with more than just the frightening creatures in front of her. Kate's forced to accept a new truth: her entire life has been a lie, and those closest to her have betrayed her. What's worse, she has no control over her new future, and it's full of magic and horrors from which nightmares are made. Will Kate discover and learn to control who she really is in time to save the ones she loves, or will all be lost?
Those two words spark fear in Katriona Wilde and give way to an unlikely partnership with Perth, the man she’s been traded to marry for a favor. Saving her true love and protector Arland, her family, and their soldiers keeps her motivated, but the at-odds duo soon realizes trust is something that comes and goes with each breath of Encardia’s rotting, stagnant air. The moment when concern for her missing sister spirals out of control, all thoughts of trust are pushed aside and she finds herself trapped by the daemon tricks Perth warned her of.
However, rescuing those she loves is only half the problem.
Kate still must get to Willow Falls, unite her clashing people, and form an army prepared to fight in order to defeat Darkness. When so many she’s grown fond of die along the journey, her ability to play by the gods’ rules is tested.
How will she make allies when the world appears stacked against her? And will she still be Katriona Wilde, the girl with fire?

Review:
I did not expect to like and enjoy Wilde's Fire and Wilde's Army as much as I did. At first glance, judging from the cover art which is pretty, I mistook the series for another paranormal YA series. I was wrong. Within a few pages I was hooked into Katriona's life. Katriona, or Kate as she is called, is readying for a camping trip along with her best friend, Brad, and her younger sister, Brit. I didn't understand why Brad was allowed to sleep in her bed in the opening scene, especially with the girls' mother and stepfather living in the same house, but I chalked it up to an "each his own" type of reasoning. For a college student, Kate did come across a little too young with her not dating guys/having been kissed/oblivious to Brad's apparent hang-up with her but, like I said, "each his own."
Then Kate saw the yellow light while on her camping trip and things began to change. I sat up and truly took notice. When she follows the light into the water and finds a cave which leads to some dark, mysterious underground place, things really took off in this story and I was happily caught up in every thing. Kate and Brad wind up in another world, the ever dark Encardia. Brad is injured and Kate is taken away. From then on, Wilde's Army becomes this mesmerizing fantastical tale of a young woman finding out her true role and purpose in life. Kate's strange dreams which she has had for years now hold meaning. The man she always saw in these dreams is quite alive and breathtakingly handsome, Aland Maher. As Kate understands what his people have gone through--the murders of their families by horrible daemons and other hideous creatures of the Darkness--Kate realizes she has a major role in the outcome and safety of this race, a race she belongs to.
With her heart already lost to Aland, Kate begins training under his tutelage. She is befriended by his cousin, Fanna, and comprehends more of her growing role as the Light to destroy the evil blackness covering the land. As Kate learns to wield her powers, Aland is there to guide her, as they both fall in love. I was impressed with Krystal Wade's fantasy story from the menacing daemons to the elven people of Encardia and their history. There were many unique aspects I enjoyed which made this story stand out to me--like residents capture their 'history' by drawing scenes on the earthen walls, magical spells are set in place to keep above ground buildings like the barn invisible to the daemons, sprites appear as the harbingers of old magic.
The characters were well developed, the conflicts clearly defined, the subplots and secondary stories consistent, and the worldbuilding, though not as outstanding as in some other fantasies, was still cleverly created to make Encardia special and unforgettable. As the narrator, Kate's first person present narration kept me totally in the here and now and I never felt the pacing slow down. The characters and their situations kept me entertained from scene to scene. Kate became a strong woman and I really liked her and how her relationship with Aland developed into something more. And what an ending to Wilde's Fire--in one word, wow! What a way to wake up!
The action and thrills continue with Wilde's Army as Kate wanders and meets Perth, the dark dweller she is supposed to be Bound to. He wasn't much of a presence in the first book but he is here and how I wanted to hate him since I was such a fan of Aland. I couldn't dislike Perth. Brit goes missing, the setting moves to Willow Falls and I knew the dark god would surface once again. One strong part of this series is the emphasis on 'love' and its power to win against the dark and evil ones (I know the love as power against evil theme is similar to that of Voldemort and Harry Potter but here the author creates her own distinct theme). I don't want to give away any spoilers. Wilde's Fire and Wilde's Army is an enchanting fantasy series and I've definitely become a fan of author Krystal Wade.
Rating: 4 for Wilde's Fire, a solid 4.5 for Wilde's Army
