Book review: A Skinwalker's Legacy by Shae Wynters
Genre: Paranormal romance
Format: ebook (226 pages)
Publisher: Liquid Silver Books (March 24, 2012)
Blurb: Lexia Torrance is a young woman with the gift of second sight. Her ability allows the Phoenix Police Department to solve crimes based on the gift of touch. Her latest case leads her to the body of a local man left with the killers' calling card—an emblem burned on the victim's chest in the shape of a sun. She soon finds herself facing five men looking for the necklace with the same emblem…and they are determined to find her as well...
Galen Cortes knows the immense ability deep inside Lexia as well as her destiny to take the throne as Skinwalker Chieftess to the southwest tribe. As a guard of the tribe, Galen has sworn to protect Lexia and teach her the truth about her powers. Despite what his heart feels, he knows a guard isn’t supposed to get too close to a betrothed Chieftess. But his fiery passion may soon override his rational thought.
With a murderous Lycan tribe on their tail and only a few hours to spare once Lexia learns her birthright, Galen will only have a day to teach her what those before her learned in a lifetime. Before their time is over, passion will erupt between the guard and his ruler, a fateful battle will dawn between two tribes and a new Chieftess will arise within the nocturnal hours…
My thoughts: Shae Wynters has created an intriguing world of shapeshifters joining clans together to strengthen their numbers to survive while some test and alternate their dna with lycan blood, an act that has been outlawed. Lexia has been always been different and her grandmother tried to help her fit in as she grew up. Being cared for and loved isn't everything this young woman needed--she also needed to know the truth about her parents, their lineage, and her role in this newly discovered race of supernatural beings. Galen helps save her from a lycan attack and it's almost as if she knows him already. She does. He has been a member of her guard and he was assigned to watch over her in the human world. Being a warrior is in his half breed blood (part shifter, part fae) and he needs to bring Lexia safely to his village so she can marry and take her rightful role as Chieftess. Can Lexia take on a new role she practically feels belongs to her while marrying a man/beast she detests?

A Skinwalker's Legacy is a gritty, sexy, fast paced read. The action of an urban fantasy combined with an interesting take on shapeshifters, add in some hot romance and this book is another title to add to one's TBR list. Lexia's journey from oblivious 'human' woman to shapeshifter chieftess would make any strong woman cringe but she doesn't. Strong, sarcastic, hot tempered, Lexia is one strong heroine. Galen is a loner trying to prove his worth to his clan while he falls in love with his Chieftess, knowing he cannot have her when her betrothal was handed down from an ancient prophecy. When together, the coupling of Lexia and Galen kept me glued to the pages. wanting to know what would happen next. A satisfying read.
Rating: 3 1/2 stars. I liked it.
Favorite excerpt: "She moved reluctantly, trying to ignore the warning blaring in her chest. The necklace warmed in her sweaty palm and she had to fight to keep her eyes from darting between him and the Lycans.
“Damien,” she said, standing tall. “I think you better take your dogs and go home. I don’t know what you think you’ll accomplish by being here. Whatever it is, take it elsewhere because I’m not interested.”
He stared at her, taken aback by her words. The thick tension in the air broke with the heartiness of his laugh. He shook his head amused. “Impressive. He must’ve brought out the instinct in you.” His gaze ran over the length of her body. “Among other things. But his little fun is over.”
Damien turned toward the woods. “Did you think you could keep this from me and the tribe, Galen?” He turned to look at her. “Seducing the upcoming Chieftess and making her fall in love with you. He must be one good lay.”
“It’s not even like that,” Lexia said, balling her fists at her side. “We weren’t intimate like that.”
Damien moved closer to her and leaned forward. “That’s not what I smell on you.” He chuckled. “Did he even tell you what your duty was, girl? You, by birth, are bound to me. As Chieftess to the tribe, you are to officially wed me before taking over from your aunt. Now look at you. Nearly soiled with a pitiful low grade half breed. You’ll have to face the council, not to mention the Chieftess herself, who will deal with your disgrace.”
“Better a guard trying to save my life than a prince wanting to end it.”
A deep chuckle caused her blood to ice. This creature before her could not be the one she was betrothed to all of her life. How could her body yearn for Galen and she felt nothing but repulsion toward Damien? The prophecy was wrong. It had to be."

Cover comment: This cover works for me. I like the models representing Lexia and Galen and the imagery silhouetted adds an authentic touch. I'm glad the publisher didn't go the typical route of a bare chested Galen holding Lexia.
Book source: I received an ebook copy in exchange for my totally honest review during a book tour.
