Freshman Year & Other Unnatural Disasters Blog Tour
The three of us here at Reader Girls were thrilled to be part of this tour and our eighth grader, Caity, was extremely thrilled. Since she will be a freshman herself next September, she couldn't wait to get her hands on a copy of this book. Read her review here. Welcome to today's stop on the official Freshman Year & Other Unnatural Disasters Blog Tour. Author Meredith Zeitlin has a fun QUIZ for everyone to take and make sure to watch the book trailer--it's great! Enjoy!
Title: Freshman Year and Other Unnatural Disasters
Author: Meredith Zeitlin
Genre: Young Adult
Synopsis: Let's say you're fourteen and live in New York City. You'd think your life would be like a glamorous TV show, right? And yet . . . You don't have a checking account, much less a personal Black American Express card. You've never been to a club, and the only couture in your closet is a Halloween costume your mom made from an old laundry bag.
In other words? You're Kelsey Finkelstein - fourteen and frustrated. Every time she tries to live up to her awesome potential, her plans are foiled. Kelsey wants to rebrand herself for high school to make the kind of mark she knows is her destiny. But just because Kelsey has a plan for greatness . . . it doesn't mean the rest of the world is in on it.
Kelsey's hilarious commentary and sardonic narration of her freshman year will have readers laughing out loud - while being thankful that they're not in her shoes, of course.
Book Trailer:
QUIZ:
WHICH "FRESHMAN YEAR..." CHARACTER ARE YOU?
Kelsey and her three best friends – Em, JoJo, and Cassidy – are pretty different from each other. (Just like, you know, most people and their friends. Otherwise we'd all be really bored, I think.) If you've read the book, you know each girl handles things in her own special way. So, which one are YOU most like?
1. A cute guy catches your eye at a school dance. Your friends are poking you in a very obvious way and egging you on to go talk to him. You:
a) go talk to him, of course! You are fascinating – lucky him.
b) hide in the Ladies Room. Do not come out til the dance is over.
c) flirt with every other guy around you, but keep looking his way. Surely he'll get the hint and come introduce himself, right? I mean, he's the GUY in this scenario.
d) spend an hour debating the best plan of attack, then decide to just go for it. Trip over your own shoelace as you approach him, and fall directly into the girl he started dancing with after he gave up on you ever coming to talk to him.
2. There's a huge party at an upperclassman's apartment that you weren't exactly invited to... but you really want to go. You:
a) go, obviously. Like you'd really miss a fun party? If your friends chicken out, make some new ones once you get there. That way you'll get an actual invitation next time and everyone can go!
b) try to impress upon your crazy friends that showing up uninvited would be a very bad idea and that it would be much better to go to the movies or something. Junior mints will be your treat...?
c) try to come up with a way to make it seem like you ended up at the party accidentally. Formulate an elaborate plan that involves you selling something door-to-door and just HAPPENING to end up at the soiree.
d) realize that you should go to the movies or something, but allow yourself to be talked into going. Try to make the best of it by looking super cute and accidentally tweeze off one of your eyebrows. Wear an eye-patch and pray it's a costume party.
3. Your friend is having a really hard time at school lately – she seems tired and spacey and sad and you don't know what's wrong. You:
a) ambush her by her locker and demand answers. It's always best to be upfront.
b) write her a letter and slip it inside her locker. Let her know that you're really concerned and always there if she wants to talk – anytime.
c) try to figure out what's going on by asking around. Surely someone knows something, right?
d) rehearse the best thing to say in your bathroom mirror a thousand times until you get it just right. Finally approach her, forget everything you were going to say, and burst into a panicked tap-dance. Try again until you get it right.
4. You're about to head out to see a movie with your friends when your parents swan in and announced that they're bored and want to come, too. You:
a) tell them they can come, but they have to get their OWN Twizzlers. No fair swiping yours like last time. Oh – and no throwing popcorn at people who look annoying. Do they want to get kicked out again?!
b) ask them to sit down and tell you what's really going on. Do they think you're lying about where you're going? Because you aren't, and you don't get why they would suddenly not trust you.
c) immediately pitch a fit and storm out of the house (but not before demanding ticket money). As if you'd go anywhere in public with them?!
d) stare at them in abject horror for about 30 seconds before asking if they are deliberately trying to ruin your life or if they just don't realize they're doing it. Because you REALLY want to know. Go upstairs and cancel your plans before things get even more out of hand.
5. You're out shopping with your friends and one of them tries on something that is completely hideous and NOT flattering. She asks for your opinion, but you can tell she thinks it looks awesome. You:
a) tell her that if she loves it she should rock it. Dare to be different!
b) tell her you think she looks great in everything, but she'd look even better in something else.
c) tell her it's a nightmare and to take it off immediately. You have her best interests at heart, and you can't worry about her feelings right now!
d) tell her you're pretty sure you saw Julie Nelson wearing something just like it last week. That should put an end to this fiasco-to-be pretty quickly. If not, then plan B: spill tar on it ASAP. (Also, find out where to get tar.) Answer Key below.

MOSTLY As: You're a JoJo. Confident in everything you do, you don't let self-conciousness or other people's doubts stand in your way. Sometimes you might be a BIT overzealous, but as long as you have your friends around to keep you in check you'll be A-OK.
MOSTLY Bs: You're an Em. You might be on the shy side and less willing to take risks, but you're always there for a friend who needs you. People are often surprised to discover how strong you are underneath your quiet demeanor.
MOSTLY Cs: You're a Cassidy. Sometimes you come across as a bit flighty and over-dramatic, but that bravado covers up fear of rejection. Once you feel comfortable enough with people, you let your guard down and are fiercely protective of your friends.
MOSTLY Ds: You're a Kelsey. Even though you're surrounded by people who think you're awesome, you don't always believe it yourself. You try so hard to get it right all the time that you often sabotage yourself! Don't worry so much – it's gonna work out okay. And at least you can laugh about it later.

A WOW! Women On Writing Book Tour
Oh wow this book sounds so great - I can't wait to read it. Thank you for sharing! :)
ReplyDeleteThis is the best book a 14 (24,34, 44,54....) year old could wish for in every way. It's funny, poignant, original, engrossing ...FUNNY.... I wish I knew Kelsey when I was her age, but I am just as delighted to find her as an adult/semi grown up :)
ReplyDeleteI came out as more Cassidy here which I can see, but I definitely saw so much of myself in all of these girls! This book is so refreshing as a reminder to keep perspective on our lives and have fun and the importance of friends, really really good true friends. Loved every page!
ReplyDeleteI’m a small press author and have participated in several blog tours, usually set them up myself. Basically, I’d contact the blogs (usually group blogs or review sites) that I read and respect and asked if I could guest blog. Everyone has been most gracious

I would also like to add that if you do not already have got an insurance policy or perhaps you do not form part of any group insurance, you could possibly well take advantage of seeking assistance from a health insurance professional. Self-employed or people having medical conditions usually seek the help of an health insurance dealer.

Boston was boiling, and it was Ted Kennedy who had turned up the heat. It was Kennedyism writ large (the plan was the sort of hamfisted -- and, naturally, doomed -- federal interference in local problems that Kennedy had made his life's work) and small: The judge in question, Arthur Garrity, who effectively took over Boston schools for 11 years, was a Kennedy family retainer who had worked on John Kennedy's Senate and presidential campaigns.

Those kind of sensors connected with some cameras change in contrast, while others use a beam associated with infra-red (IR) light, specially in low light. Higher specs cameras from time to time use a combination of both techniques and likely have Face Priority AF where the camera can ‘See’ your face while keeping focused only in that.
