You've published so many novels in the paranormal time travel and
erotic genres, why contemporary romance now?
It’s really not much of a jump. My time travels all have contemporary sections. Twenty-first century women shifting back to the sixteenth century. Lot of modern stuff going on in all of these novels. Writing a straight contemporary helps clear my mind of furry and magical and pushes me as an author to make things flow and work without the aid of a paranormal element. The bottom line is I love to read just about any romance novel. I see no need to write only one type of romance novel. I have a romantic suspense sitting under my bed and a full length straight historical as well. I don’t know if I’ll ever get around to publishing them… but I wrote ‘em.
How was your experience changing genres? Any aspect difficult or easier?
I don’t have to build a world in contemporary, just lives. So in that way it’s easier. But as I stated above, I don’t have the crutch of magic. Both books have their own set of problems and solutions. The goal is to hook my reader, deliver believable characters they can in some way relate to, and end with a happily ever after. With a little nookie thrown in, of course. I will tell you that writing a contemporary is faster for me.
Do you think you'll continue with contemporary romance now?
I will write both! I have a few contemporary romance novels brewing. I hope to have an announcement soon about a Christmas story I hope will be out by 2012. We’ll see. And I do plan on writing four books in this series. Married by Monday will be out next year.
Are there any experiences with fans you care to share? Something
someone has said or written to you which really touched you?
The concept of Catherine Bybee fans is just wild to me. One of the first fans I met drove a couple of hours to come to my first book signing. That fan and I are now great friends. So that’s exciting. I do want to share this… several years ago, while trying to find a home for Binding Vows, my first time travel, I was standing in a book store in the romance section, and I noticed a woman kneel down to gaze at a large section of books written by the same author. At the time I didn’t know the author’s name, but they had obviously been busy as there were at least twelve titles on the shelf. Well, this fan proceeded to stack about eight of those twelve books in her hand and walk to the checkout stand. I stood back and said, “One day that will be me.” I want my fans to like my work so much that they want to read it all. If they enjoy my voice and style I think they’ll pick up my books even if they aren’t their normal type of read. I suppose erotic is the exception. You either like erotic or you don’t. By all means, if you don’t like your romance that hot, don’t read it. I have several fans who have crossed genre’s to read my books. And that makes me extremely happy.
Are you happy with your decision to become an independent author? Do you have any 'words of wisdom' for aspiring writers after having so many of your novels published?
I am very happy with my decision to independently publish Wife by Wednesday. I cannot say that all of my work will be solo. I’m still working with publishers and will continue to do so. However, self publishing has been amazing for me at this point. As for the aspiring writer… I think the best thing I can say is this. Write the best book you can write, edit the hell out of it, and then get it out there. Indie publishing doesn’t mean you skip any steps. You have to add a ton. So try and publish your work with a publisher. Get feedback. Learn your craft and continue writing every day.
With the increasing popularity of ereaders and many authors going the independent route, what are your thoughts about publishing in the future?
I think everything we know about traditional publishing is being turned on its ear. Big bookstores are failing, and will continue to do so. I think the ‘lil guy is coming back. E-Books will be the norm and print will be the rare exception in less than a decade. *just my prediction* sigh… I know, I love print books, too, but do any of you own of record any longer? We download everything. That is only going to be ‘more so’ in the future. It’s a great time to be an author. We have more choices than ever and for the first time, authors can actually make a living doing what they love. That is a win-win for everyone.
