Excerpt: In the grayish soup, a dark vision appeared. Floating down the middle of the street, it slowly formed into a recognizable shape.

An animal. A large black animal. A huge Great Dane. It walked with confidence. Long, thin legs. Mouth closed, head and eyes fixed straight ahead. Occasionally, its feet splashed one of the pools. Light from the streetlights caused a sparkle from underneath its neck with every step of its left forefoot. A large diamond, set on a gold tag, captured the light and shot it out like a laser. The dog maintained its pace for what seemed like minutes.

Finally, it stopped. With its body still pointing down the street, it slowly turned its head to the right and looked up a sidewalk leading to the front door of a house. It stared, still emotionless, at the door. At Tony Parker’s door.

Believe it or not, Jezebel was inspired by a cute little ferret. Years ago, I was staring at a blank page in my typewriter while sitting at the dining room table, trying to decide what kind of a novel to write. I’d started a humor novel, and was about two-thirds finished, when I heard at a writers conference that humor novels don’t sell unless you’re Jay Cronley (Screwballs, Funny Farm) or Tom Bodett. So, there I was, trying to type that first inspired line onto the page that would open up my creative flood gates to propel me through four hundred pages of a novel, when the family ferret came bounding around the corner from the living room. “Jezebel,” I thought, “Ferret from Hell!”

Well, even a mean ferret isn’t all that scary (and Jezzie was the most gentle thing alive), but what about a huge, black Great Dane. I love Great Danes. They, too, are extremely gentle and intelligent. They’re beautiful and loyal animals. But what if something caused one of these gentle giants to get mean—go bad? Now we’re talking scary! The idea for the novel blossomed from there. It’s actually a revenge novel, and a number of gentle family dogs are influenced to do horrific things that they would never have done in their right minds. I also wanted to populate the story with ordinary people going through the ups and downs of life. The protagonist, Tony Parker is the best example: he’s a struggling family man going through a mid-life crisis—gray hair showing at the temples.

Anyway, I wrote the first version of the novel in about four months, sent it off to a couple of publishers and got a contract right away—wow, that was easy! Trouble was, three years later, the same week the publisher was scheduled to print 10,000 copies, they went bankrupt. That was 1995. Years after that, I finally went “indie” and published it myself—and readers have really loved it. This summer, I put Jezebel out in all eBook formats (along with my other thrillers Brainstorm and Dead Reckoning) and that’s why I’m blogging about my big scary girl, Jezebel, today.
