Reader Girls Guest Blog with E.J. Stevens

We've noticed the increase of ghostly/paranormal YA stories on the market with more to come and were wondering how you felt about that in regards to your own series.

I often think of myself as a reader first. As a reader, I believe that there can never be too many ghostly paranormal YA stories on the market. I have had a voracious appetite for ghost stories and other paranormal poetry and prose since early childhood. My parents would read from Lord Halifax’s Complete Ghost Book and my mom would share the dark faerie filled folktales of her youth. I was hooked. I put down Dr. Seuss and picked up Edgar Allan Poe.

In more recent years I became addicted to reading and writing young adult paranormal fiction. After growing up reading adult fantasy and paranormal fiction, it may seem surprising that as an adult I turned to the young adult end of the spectrum, but my reasoning is sound. YA paranormal fiction rocks!

Okay that may have been oversimplifying a bit, but it does express my love of young adult paranormal fiction. While I still love the dark tales, Welsh folklore, and graveyard poets of my youth, I adore contemporary paranormal YA. My love of YA comes, in part, from the abundance of wonderful authors writing today.

There are so many amazing YA paranormal authors. A few of my favorites are Julie Kagawa, Kersten Hamilton, Kim Harrison, Richelle Mead, Cassandra Clare, Rachel Hawkins, and Maggie Stiefvater. My hope is that the YA paranormal market continues to grow and support the fabulous authors who provide us with these worlds of magic and wonder.

As a writer I would like to end with one additional thought. Though it is wonderful to have the support of the industry at our backs, in the end the story must be written. Most authors write to create. We are motivated by the voices in our heads that scream to be heard. Characters demand to be fully realized and worlds must be built. I can tell you with every confidence that I will continue to write paranormal YA stories filled with quirky characters, regardless of market trends, for a very long time.
