Nice and Mean By Jessica Leader

Reading level: Ages 9-12
Paperback: 272 pages
Publisher: Aladdin; Original edition (June 8, 2010)

Book summary: Nice and Mean by Jessica Leader is a hilarious story about two girls one nice, one mean facing off in their middle school video elective.

My Review: Marina didn't know Sachi existed. Sachi tried to pretend Marina didn't exist. Marina was sassy and rude. Sachi was nice but childish. The only thing the two of them had in common, was their school's video elective. Two different personalities, two different ideas. One video.

One of my favorite things about Nice and Mean was how it included Sachi's video nightmares, so you got to really find out about what she was thinking about at the moment or thinking would happen. I felt as if I really got to know her - as if she was a real person, not a character! I also enjoyed reading Marina's little black book entry's, and the lists she wrote about the people,places, and things surrounding her, and what was going on.

The only thing I disliked was the beginning. The beginning of the book was a little slow, in my opinion. Though, after the first chapter or so, it picks up and you get wrapped up in the drama in the story. The greatest part is the end, it has a great twist that I think you'll really like.

Altogether, Nice and Mean by Jessica Leader is a great, heartwarming read.

Favorite exert: From page 261, advanced readers copy:
Sachi's Life : A video just for fun

Sachi walks down the empty hallway, a spring in her step.

Close-up on her armful of books and Jabber Monkey's pencil case. Light bounces off her onyx ring.

FADE TO BLACK.

Rating: +++

Cover comment: The cover is a cute arrangment of the words nice and mean, in a way showing you each of the character's personality's.
