SCHOOL SPIRIT (Suddenly Supernatural, Book 1) by Elizabeth Cody Kimmel

Reading level: Ages 9-12
Paperback: 336 pages
Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers; Reprint edition (April 1, 2010)

BOOK DESCRIPTION: All Kat Roberts wants is to be normal, or at least to look that way to students at her new school. But her mother is a medium, and not the kind that fits in between small and large; Kat's mom is the kind of medium who sees spirits and communicates with them. And, even worse, Kat has just discovered that she can see spirits too.

In this first adventure in the popular Suddenly Supernatural series, Elizabeth Cody Kimmel brings humor and heart to the trials and tribulations of finding out who you are and who you want to be-all while surviving the seventh grade.

MY REVIEW: As many kids can relate to starting middle school can be scary. In this story Kat is a seventh grader who discovers she can see ghosts. Since her mom's a medium it makes sense she develops the same talent, but Kat doesn't really want this ability. As Kat figures out life in middle school, her best friend Jac also helps her cope with her new talent. I personally love the way this author writes--Kat is described in such a realistic way. This is the first in a series I adore (being a huge ghost story fan). SCHOOL SPIRIT is filled with humor, heart and supernatural tricks. A fun read.

RATING: ++++1/2 (Excellent! My mom met the author at a conference and had the first three books in this series personally autographed for me so they are definite keepers.)

FOR FANS OF: Middle Grade ghost stories, contemporary MG.
