Lover Awakened by J. R. Ward

MY REVIEW: With the amount of YA books I read I sometimes forget about the adult titles. Being a vampire fan, I've heard a lot about the Black Dagger Brotherhood series so I decided to catch up on my reading. LOVER AWAKENED is book number three and centers around Zsadist, or "Z", a brother who suffers from being sexually abused as a slave when he was younger. When the story opens the Brotherhood is rescuing Bella, a female vamp from an aristocratic family. Z met her in the preceeding book so we're aware of his attraction, which is mutual. Z and his brethren locate Bella, kill the Lessers (their enemies), and return back to the Brotherhood compound with her. When Bella awakens she only wants to be with Z who is shocked by her needing him. Z has low self esteem and is afraid to feel emotional towards anyone, especially a female, after his terrible past.
Bella doesn't want any other, not even Z's twin, Phury. It doesn't matter that Z is scarred both physically (his face and back bear the marks of his abuse, in addition to the tattoos marring his skin as a sex slave), and mentally (he can only receive pleasure by inflicting pain on himself). Can Bella help Z heal and make him love her before the Lesser who marked her as his wife tries to reclaim her?
Ward's novel is complex, slipping seamlessly from character to character as the stories unfold. Her vampire world is slightly different from so many others to make it unique enough in a saturated market. Her storyline is rich and vivid and her writing is gripping. I felt for her characters and have become a fan of this series. This author ranks right up there with Kresley Cole, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Lara Adrian and the other queens of paranormal storytelling. Her male characters definitely have the Top 5 "D's": they are dark, dangerous, deadly, dashing, and very desirable.
RATING: ++++1/2 Loved it!
SERIES: Yes.
FOR FANS OF: Paranormal, romance, fantasy, drama.
