Fairy Tale by Cyn Balog
Reading level: Young Adult
Hardcover: 256 pages
Publisher: Delacorte Books for Young Readers (June 23, 2009)
BOOK DESCRIPTION: Morgan Sparks has always known that she and her boyfriend, Cam, are made for each other. But when Cam’s cousin Pip comes to stay with the family, Cam seems depressed. Finally Cam confesses to Morgan what’s going on: Cam is a fairy. The night he was born, fairies came down and switched him with a healthy human boy. Nobody expected Cam to live, and nobody expected his biological brother, heir to the fairy throne, to die. But both things happened, and now the fairies want Cam back to take his rightful place as Fairy King.
Even as Cam physically changes, becoming more miserable each day, he and Morgan pledge to fool the fairies and stay together forever. But by the time Cam has to decide once and for all what to do, Morgan’s no longer sure what’s best for everyone, or whether her
and Cam’s love can weather an uncertain future.
MY REVIEW: Morgan has been called spooky since she's psychic. Too bad she can't foretell what happens to her boyfriend, Cam. They have a storybook relationship: neighbors, best friends since birth, he's a football star and she feels regular, except for the seeing the future thing. A week before their joint sixteenth birthday party, Cam begins to change. Only Morgan can what's happening to him. And so can his visiting cousin, Pip.
Change may not always be what one hopes for. In Cam's case, he's turning into a fairy. It seems a fairy switched Cam with human baby Pip. Now Morgan has to deal with her beloved growing pointy ears and wings on his back. To top that off, after she gives Pip a makeover, she realizes he's hot--and technically Pip was the one Morgan was supposed to be with. What's a teen to do?
Fairy Tale is a fun, fast, delightful read. It had me smiling, laughing, reading faster to turn the page, a gamut of emotions. I enjoyed Balog's spin with the fairy lore and she kept the tension high and pace moving swiftly. I won't view fortune cookies the same way anymore. I await the next book in this new series.
